Slings are widely used lifting and transport equipment in the industrial field. Slings made of polyester have different properties. Slings produced in different lengths and diameters are used in different areas according to their properties and functions. It is quite important to choose the sling type following the weight and size of the load to be lifted.
In the work done with slingshots, there may be occupational accidents caused by the impact of the object. Situations such as jamming between the object, falling, hitting and cutting the object may occur. Certain methods should be applied to prevent occupational accidents resulting in limb loss such as finger amputation and to reduce risks. These methods minimise the identified risks.
What are the rules to be considered to minimise the risks of sling use?
Some safety rules must be followed to protect against the risks of sling use. These rules are as follows:
- Use the appropriate sling and slinging technique according to the weight and condition of the load to be lifted.
- Make sure that a wide angle does not occur between the sling arms.
- Do not prefer to use a single sling as the load may rotate with the use of a single sling and the sling may come loose.
- When using double slings, make sure that their lengths are equal.
- Do not start slinging without taking precautions for sharp edges.
- When lifting a group of loads, use wooden wedges to prevent the loads from slipping.
- When slinging, make sure that the sling does not damage the load and the load does not damage the sling.
- After slinging and lifting the load, take care to rest the load before moving horizontally.
- Do not leave the load suspended and do not drag the load or sling on the ground.
- During horizontal movement with slung loads, pay attention to working personnel and machinery.
- Store the slings you use in the sling locker at the end of your work.
- Do not use slings with more than 10% fractures per 1m, rusted and dented slings, or slings with loosened windings.
- Place the sling per the centre of gravity of the load.
- Use lifting devices such as eye bolts and hooks following the rules.
- Ensure that they are free by providing controls after slinging.
- Do not stand in the area of the load. Do not allow other persons to stand.
- Make sure that the sling rings enter and exit the hook easily.
- Do not pull stuck slings with the help of a winch.
- Use slings so as not to exceed the safe working loads.
